SMA Missions (SLSW, AC)
When you purchase a ticket to the We Are the Children Charity Gala or place a bid in our Silent Auction, you’re doing far more than attending an event—you are helping save lives. Your support provides critical hemodialysis treatments to children and young adults suffering from kidney disease who cannot afford the care they need to survive.
In March 2025, SMA Missions, with the generous support of two U.S.-based nonprofits--New Orleans Medical Missions (NOMMS) and Cheer-Up International—delivered a lifesaving gift to Mexico: seven advanced hemodialysis machines, valued at $400,000 MXN, along with essential medical supplies and pediatric equipment. These were donated to Fundación Para Diálisis, J. Socorro López, AC (SMA Dialysis Clinic) to serve patients aged 1 to 35.
But machines alone don’t save lives—they must be made operational. Each unit requires installation, routine maintenance, and disposable supplies such as filters, which must be replaced after every session. Just one dialysis treatment costs $1,300 MXN ($67 USD). With three sessions per week required per patient, that’s $3,900 MXN ($202 USD) weekly, or more than $203,000 MXN ($11,000 USD) per year for just one patient.
That’s why our mission is urgent:
We need to raise $4.1 million MXN to fully fund one year of free dialysis treatments for eight financially vulnerable patients—a total of 1,248 sessions annually, giving them hope and the chance to live while they await a kidney donor.
But SMA Missions is committed to more than treatment—we’re working to break the cycle of disease before it begins.
We are raising awareness of the devastating rise in childhood diseases linked to obesity, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Mexico. Through early diagnosis, education, and improved nutrition, we aim to stop these life-threatening conditions before they take root.
Our work includes:
- Delivering medical relief and disease prevention education
- Offering community workshops in the Campo (countryside)
- Supporting nutrition and early intervention programs
- Equipping underserved communities with the tools to build a healthier future
Malnutrition is becoming an increasingly urgent issue in Mexico’s Bajio and right here in our backyard of San Miguel de Allende with nearly one in nine people experiencing basic nutritional insecurity every day. Access to basic and safe nutrition is a fundamental human right—no child should ever face a night without enough to eat.
To address this, SMA Missions collaborates with global partners to distribute VitaMeal—a specially designed nutritional supplement created to fight malnutrition. Developed by Nu Skin’s team of nutritional scientists, VitaMeal provides carefully balanced vitamins and minerals vital for healthy brain, bone, and immune system development—nutrients often missing from typical grain-based emergency food supplies. To date, over 800 million servings have been provided to children in need across the globe.
Beyond fighting hunger, VitaMeal also provides critical nutrition to help reverse the rising tide of childhood obesity, malnutrition, diabetes, and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Mexico’s Bajio—conditions that are taking root at alarming rates in underserved communities in the Campo. With every meal shared, we reflect love and take one step closer to breaking the cycle of disease and poverty.
Every ticket purchased, every auction bid placed, every peso and every dollar donated brings us one step closer to our goal. With your support, we will transform seven donated hemodialysis machines into a fully operational clinic—a place of healing and hope. Together, we can not only deliver life-saving treatment but also break the cycle of childhood diseases caused by poverty, poor nutrition, and lack of early intervention. This is how we bring health, dignity, and a future to the most vulnerable in our community.
What began as a simple desire to feed malnourished children has grown into a God-given mission to be a vessel of His provision—not only for the hungry but also for children and young adults at high risk of obesity, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. We believe this mission is greater than any one organization. It is a shared calling—and we invite you to stand with us in faith and compassion as we work together to bring hope, healing, and nourishment to those who need it most.
Together, we can turn compassion into action—and machines into miracles.
