Turning Compassion Into Action

SMA Missions is on the front lines of a growing health crisis in Mexico. Childhood diseases driven by obesity, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are rising at alarming rates—especially in the rural “Campo” of Central Mexico.

We are dedicated to confronting the rising epidemic of childhood diseases in Mexico—especially those caused by obesity, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. Through early diagnosis, education, treatment and improved nutrition, we strive to prevent these conditions before they take hold. Through our outreach and nutritional counselling we hope to fundamentally change nutrition in the Campo (countryside).

Our mission is clear, to save lives, empower families, and build a healthier future through early diagnosis, education, treatment, and improved nutrition.

In March 2025, SMA Missions, with the support of New Orleans Medical Missions (NOMMS) and Cheer-Up Missions, donated seven (7) Hemodialysis Phoenix Gambro Machines, and other important medical supplies necessary to support suffering Mexican children. All of the Hemodialysis machines plus other medical supplies were made available to the Fundación Para Diálisis J. Socorro López, AC, (SMA Dialysis Clinic) located in San Miguel de Allende.

What We’re Doing:

• Mobile Clinics
  We’re launching free mobile health clinics in San Miguel de Allende and expanding to underserved areas of the Bajío region. These clinics offer vital testing, diagnosis, and treatment for obesity, diabetes, and early-stage CKD.
  
  
• Dialysis Access
  For children already suffering from kidney disease, we aim to fund hemodialysis sessions for children at Clinics within the area. With your help, we’re offering both healing and hope.
  
  
• Nutritional Counseling & Education
  Through community workshops and outreach programs in rural areas, we’re teaching families how to break the cycle of poor nutrition and prevent disease before it starts. Malnutrition is becoming an increasingly urgent issue in Mexico’s Bajio and right here in our backyard of San Miguel de Allende. Access to basic and safe nutrition is a fundamental human right—no child should ever face a night without enough to eat.

 

• Fighting Malnutrition
  In partnership with NuSkin, we distribute VitaMeal, a scientifically formulated nutritional supplement created by NuSkin’s team of experts. Each serving provides essential vitamins and minerals that are often missing from emergency food supplies. To date, over 800 million meals have been shared worldwide. VitaMeal plays a role in reversing the devastating effects of obesity, diabetes, and CKD by delivering the nutrients children need for healthy development.

Our Local Impact

In the Bajío region—including right here in San Miguel de Allende--1 in 9 people face daily nutritional insecurity. We believe access to safe, nutritious food is a basic human right. No child should ever go to bed hungry.

The Health Statistics for Children in Mexico is Alarming

• Mexico is #1 in Latin America for both overweight and obesity rates in children and adolescents.
• Mexico ranks #1 in North America for stunting.
• Mexico has the highest rates of chronic undernutrition in children under five.
• ​Mexico stands out for having one of the highest documented young-onset Type-2 Diabetes (T2D) burdens in Latin America.
• Mexico ranks among the highest countries worldwide for young-onset T2D burden, which includes ages ~10–24.
• Rapid rise in obesity, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
• Latin America has one of the highest burdens of CKD globally, with Mexico among the most heavily impacted.​
• Nearly 1 in 9 people face daily nutritional insecurity with Mexico facing a triple burden of malnutrition: persistent stunting (chronic undernutrition), anemia and micronutrient deficiencies, and rising rates of overweight and obesity even in young children.

Many suffer in silence, with no access to treatment or education.

What started as a mission to import Dialysis machines into Mexico has become a God-given calling to restore health, dignity, and hope to vulnerable children and families across Mexico.
